When did you become interested in fitness?
I grew up with parents who were very health conscious so it has always been my lifestyle. In every athletic team I have been involved with, I have always played a role in motivating others to be healthier and fitter. I feel the most fulfilled when I can guide others in finding their own fitness journey.
What is your favorite way to stay in shape?
Strength training!!! Lifting weights is the best way to sculpt and shape your body into the physique you desire. Plus, you feel so much stronger and healthier having a consistent weight training routine. I just blogged about this topic, as all too often I hear women being afraid to lift weights as they are misunderstood that if they do, they will look like a man. This couldn’t be more WRONG ladies so hit the weightsJ
What does it take to become a fitness instructor and suggestions or bits of advice for someone who is thinking about getting involved in the industry?
Best piece of advice is PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!!! Anyone who has a passion for being fit and healthy can be successful in this industry. Get a credible certification (study, so you pass your test), network with others in the industry as you can learn from everyone you come in contact with, and go for it!!
How important is a person’s diet when trying to get in shape?
Nutrition is key and it is 90% of your overall success with weight loss and in achieving your desired physique. No diet should be a “fad diet” or quick fix… it should be a diet in which you are getting proper proportions of macronutrients (proteins, carbs, fat) to your specific needs and goals.
What types of activities would you recommend for someone just starting a physical activity program?
Activities that are enjoyable!! I would not recommend someone to start a running program if they absolutely DREAD running. I would recommend something more realistic that is easier to commit to and suggest working with a trainer, a workout buddy, or joining a boot camp… something where accountability can play a big part. I would also recommend setting short term SMART goals (Specific Measureable Attainable Realistic and Time oriented) to help aid in the success of the long term goals.
What do you recommend to people who are bored with their fitness routines?
CHANGE!! Keep changing it up and challenging yourself. Your body adapts very easily, so finding new or different exercises, altering the intensity, time, reps, sets, changing body or foot positions, trying new classes, whatever it may be, but throw some curve balls in there to keep your body guessing and keep your metabolism revved!!
What keeps you motivated to keep working out?
For me personally, it is my job. My physique is my best advertisement so therefore it always needs work. Plus, it is the healthiest way to relieve stress and it feels so good!!
How do you stay current on new fitness trends?
I am certified through ACE and there are a certain number of CEC’s we need to obtain annually by reading, attending seminars, etc. I am also a member of IDEA which keeps me in the loop of the latest in the fitness industry.
What else do you do to stay healthy?
I do a lot of reflecting. I think too often we focus on how far we have to go and don’t take a step back to look at how far we have actually come. Every Sunday I like to reflect on the week prior and jot down my own personal notes on success of the week, and things I can improve on… kind of a detailed “to do” list. I also practice visualization and make sure I get quality time with my fiancé and dogJ
